Prom and everything that goes with it!!

Prom Prom Prom!!

So as it's peak season for that special event, I am dedicating this whole post to dresses, hair styles and make up ideas.........

Prom Dresses

Finding the perfect prom dress takes time.....If you're lucky, it may be the first dress you try on....But normally you will try a few different dresses in a few different stores before making the BIG decision. Here are some points to think about when searching.

It's good to think about your whole look when you put a dress on; how you want your hair to look, what kind of make up, style of shoe etc...This will help you make the right decision if you know exactly what you want. It's a great idea to take a pair of heels with you to try with the dress and maybe do your hair similar to show what the whole look will be like.

There are so many different styles of gowns....Strapless gowns always look elegant, especially with hair in an 'up do'. You have to make sure the dress fits perfectly though so you don't spend the whole evening pulling it up....Not attractive!! This season's popular colors are coral, royal blue, blush pink and lilac. Take a look at these...

This has a beautiful floaty skirt and really suits olive colored skin. Loosely braided hair would go perfectly with this gown
Royal blue is a classic color and ideal for an evening gown. It goes great with silver accessories, and the hair in a bun finishes off the look perfectly.

Blush pink and lilac are gorgeous pastil colors. They give a feminine look and will suit a relaxed hairstyle and nude or silver colored shoes. Both these gowns are by www.jovani.com and are available now in store!
I love this gown. The mint green color is so fresh and the different shades throughout the dress make it so unique! The hair draped to one side goes perfeclty too!

If you're not sure which color to chose, try a few, see which suits you the most....Even though you might have a certain color in your head, you may find another suits you better or you just change your mind.....But remember to make sure your friends don't have the same one :-)
I love the back on this sea green dress

3 gorgeous gowns below are also available in store....

If you're looking for some sparkle, how about this
The red goes perfectly with the silver bodice and is so flattering with the high waistband!

I also love this blue and white print dress by www.terani.com. It's great for a summer look and so unique. It's available to order in store too

Prom Hairstyles

There are so many options to chose from. Think about the style of your dress and what hair style would compliment it the most. For example, softer colors like blush pink would look great with a relaxed style like a fish-tail plait, to give that bohemian beach look like Blake Lively below

A more rich color like red or royal blue would suit a more sophisticated, red carpet look like Hayden Panettiere or curled to one side

How about this braid into a loose bun which Jessica Alba is wearing....

Or a side bun like Taylor Swift

It's a great idea to try some styles out with your friends and see which goes best with the dress

Make-up

Depending on the color of your dress, your make up should be a continuation of the whole look. So as previously mentioned, if you're going with a rich color like red or royal blue and a sophisticated hair do, your make up should be glam also; eye liner just on top, rosey cheeks and red lips to give a real red carpet look like Emma Watson below

This look is perfect for fair skin types. Look at Reese Witherspoon sporting a red pout and Scarlett Johansen with a peachy lip color

The Great Gatsby look...

If you're going for a sun kissed look how about this look with brown shades on the eys and shimmering bronzer on the face, very natural
If you have red hair, pale pink lips and rosey cheeks looks great like Emma Stone
Or how about smokey eyes like Jennifer Lopez, it looks great with neutral lip gloss and an 'up do'

Or you can even go minimal with your make up like Megan Fox
Here she has highligted the eyebrows and has false lashes to draw attention to the eyes, everything else is kept to a minimum.

Hope some of these style ideas will help you when looking for Prom inspiration! The most important thing is to feel confident in what you're wearing and enjoy this special occasion, it will only happen once!

Wedding Dress Shopping, drop-waist style and sea foam!

Hello readers!!

It's a beautiful sunny Thursday, very refreshing after it rained all day yesterday here in Toronto :-/
This week I'm talking wedding dress shopping and giving some very important tips and advice for all you 'brides to be' to think about when you begin finding your perfect bridal gown. Here goes....

Do your research

When you call a bridal store to book an appointment, they will probably ask when your wedding is, what your budget is, what style/designer you are interested in. This is so they have an idea of your personal taste and can be prepared for your appointment. So it's important that you do your own preparation. Look online at wedding dresses and designers, find out who you like and find out where they are available. This will give you a huge head start in helping you find the right dress. There are hundreds of stores so just doing a little research will help narrow it down to a select few which are to your taste.

Try to have an open mind

Of course you have some idea of what looks good on you, and probably what kind of style you want for your wedding gown....but it's still important to try on a few different styles as you never know until you try right?!
So if you have in your mind 'lace, strapless, mermaid fit' you should still try on a 'ball gown' a dress with straps and also different fabrics like like tulle, organza or silk. This way, you might realise that the idea in your mind wasn't totally accurate and you actually look better in another style, or it could help you clarify that the 'lace, strapless, mermaid' is perfect for you and trying on other styles has confirmed that.......either way it's win win!! Also remember the consultant is experienced at this, if they suggest something for you to try, trust them, they've been doing this for longer than you have!

Don't take too many along with you

Mum is normally top of the list. Then Maid of Honor or bridesmaid and or sister.......What if you have 4 sisters and 10 bridesmiads.........
Then why not chose 1 sister and 1 bridesmaid along with Mum....3 is enough and try not to exceed 4.
If you think about it, bridal stores tend to be quite boutique like, so you don't want to be crowding the place with a huge entourage! Plus, having too many opinions thrown at you will just confuse you and hinder your decision making rather than help. It also makes it less special on the day, if lots of people have already seen your dress. Oh and do not keep a picture of it on your phone....you will be constantly looking at it and end up showing more people!

Be completely honest

If you don't like something, say so. If you love something, show it! If you love the skirt on that one, but prefer the top on this one, say just that! Don't be scared to say exactly what you think, otherwise, how can they help you find your perfect wedding dress? If you're worried about forgetting each one, ask your maid of honor to make littles notes on each as you try them on. If they ask about your budget, again be honest and stick to the budget you set, you don't want to fall in love with a $4000 gown when your budget is $2000

Don't stress....take your time

As long as you've not just decided to get married next week, chances are you have plenty of time. So don't feel pressured by anyone - especially not the bridal store - into making a decision too soon when you're not 100% sure. This is the biggest day of your life remember! Think about it, go back for a second appointment, try the dress with accessories like a veil, maybe a sash, try your hair similar to how you would like it for the wedding. Ultimately, as my good friend suggested...just go with your gut feeling. Only you will know when you find 'the dress' it could be the first one you try or the tenth, but it will happen :-)

Last but certainly not least.....

Enjoy it!!

This will only happen once in your life (hopefully!) So enjoy this whole experience from start to finish. It should be lots of fun as well as a lovely chance to spend quality time with important people in your life. So smile and ENJOY!

With that said, my Mum wasn't actaully there when I found my own dress...nor were my bridesmaids. I was on tour doing a show and in Paris on my day off when I saw a stunning wedding dress in the window of a store....I thought why not go and book an appointment. So my room mate from Japan came with me and I found 'the dress'!! They let me take a picture as my Mum was back in the UK, I e-mailed it to her and she loved it. When I picked up my dress 4 months later, I went home and tried it on for my Mum and it was just as special as it would have been in the store.

My wedding Gown of this week is 'Laila' by www.paraezo.com

I love the drop-waist, and the contrasting skirt is full and ruffled but still looks light and not too heavy.....So dreamy!

Extended waist or 'drop-waist' are very popular right now, it's a great style to wear if you are shorter as it gives you height. Take a look at these other designs...

Whether you're wanting a slimline silhouette or a fuller skirt, the 'drop waist' gives length and elegance to any bridal gown.

Now for 'sea foam' I really like this color right now. We have a stunning gown in store by www.teranicouture.com that I am itching to wear (not really sure what for yet)

It has a vintage charleston feel with the waist line and skirt. LOVE!

It's a very popular color this season, take a look at 'sea foam' on the red carpet!

Well that's all for now. We have exciting things happening here at Blu Ivory Bridal, inlcuding some brand new bridal accessories and veils arriving very soon!! We are also preparing for our Grand Opening in July which will be a great weekend with lots going on in-store.....Stay tuned!!

Ruffles, Bridesmaids and Proms!

Hi there!

It's a beautiful sunny day today in Toronto which makes for a great day to come shopping  for a wedding gown or a prom dress or how about a bridesmaid dress?! :-)

If you like ruffles, you will love the skirt on this mermaid style gown by Paraezo. I love how the bodice and skirt are separated by a simple edging of crystals.....Sometimes less is more when it comes to weddings!

We've had some enquiries from brides to be wanting to incorporate a piece of material from their Mother or Grand Mother's wedding gown into their own.....This is a lovely idea and very sentimental. Here, at Blu Ivory Bridal we are able to do just that, we work with each individual bride to tailor their wedding gown so it is unique and perfect for them. We can make a sash, add or remove beading and and even alter the neck line. It's always up to the bride!

Also love the ruffles on this Paraezo weddin gown, corset syle bodice with A-line skirt. Finished off beautifully with the flower hair piece!

Take a look at these stunning bridal head bands available to purchase at Blue Ivory Bridal. Both could be worn with an up-do or with hair down and would finish off the look perfectly for the big day!

We have a great range of bridesmaids dresses available in our store....The latest trend is to give each bridesmaid a different style of dress so they all look individual....How about a different range of colors too?

Some great ideas here and using a range of colors for the bridesmaids gives a beautiful contrast to the bridal gown, especially in the pictures. The bouquets can make a huge difference too, so it's good to do lots of research and be sure of what colors you want to use for your wedding!

Speaking of colors, we have some fabulous new evening gowns in store, I personally love the embellishment on this aqua colored gown, just perfect for a summer occasion, maybe a prom or a destination wedding.....

It also has a flowing skirt with a gorgeous print which gives this gown a really unique feel.

Or how about the bodice this show-stopper.......

This evening gown by Jovani.com would be ideal for a formal night or a gala event. Available now in store!

Or if you're looking for cocktail length, check out this little black dress or 'LBD' by Jovani.com with detailed beading and feathers to give the wow factor, also available to purchase here at Blu Ivory. I love it!!!

Welcome to @bluivorybridal blog! We are very proud to announce our brand new store opened for business on Saturday March 30th 2013, how exciting!!!!!

My Name is Katie, and I'm going to be blogging about everything from bridal gowns to garters, wedding style ideas, as well as prom  and evening dresses and updates about the store!
Let me start by introducing myself......I am 28 years old, originally from the UK and recently moved to this great city of Toronto with my husband. I am passionate about all things weddingy and planned my own wedding from scratch! (pictures to follow) I'm very excited to be joining the team at Blu Ivory as one of their Bridal Stylists. I will be blogging regularly about all things mentioned above so please enjoy reading and don't hesitate to contact me for any questions or just to connect!

So here goes.....

A sneak peak into our brand new boutique...Hope you like it! I will be posting some of my favourite pieces each week!

Here at Blu Ivory Bridal, Toronto's newest Bridal and Boutique. Our aim is to provide our brides with their whole look for the 'big day'... so picking out their veil, hair piece and jewellery, as well as their dream wedding gown. That's what we hope will enable us stand out from the rest.

Now as promised, a few pics from my own wedding held in London, UK in September 2012 :-)

The ceremony was held at Hackney Town Hall in East London UK, near to where we lived

The wedding was just after the Olympics, so this pose is dedicated to Usain Bolt as we watched him win the 100m sprint live at the stadium :-) !!!!

A very British 'Tuk Tuk' which we travelled in to the park

Me and my hubby

My Mum and aunt made all the bunting hanging from the ceiling

My aunts putting the flowers into all different sized bottles which we had collected throughout the year!

It was a bit of vintage, mixed with a very British carnival theme reflecting my husband and I perfectly! Our friends and family all came to help decorate the venue the day before! Our reception was at a converted warehouse where we had a delicious hog roast by a local company! My friend perfromed a fire act outside in the evening and then we all had a dance to a rock 'n' roll band...So much fun was had!!!

As you can see I'm a sucker for vintage things! So I thought I'd show you one of our classic lace gowns with a real vintage feel by paraezo.com I personally love the brown sash with feathered flower which really accents the waist line :-) The layered skirt has been created with net and lace and really contrasts the slim-line bodice, giving an amazing look

This would look great with a birdcage veil and a lace vintage parasol don't you think?!

We're not all getting married though, so as it's prom season, here are a couple of my favourite dresses currently in store by designer Jovani....

This elegant salmon colored gown is perfect for Spring/Summer with a beautiful floaty skirt, great for dancing the night away!

Or if you're feeling more subtle and want a fitted, sophisticated look, how about this stunning black velvet number with a body-con style......

Looks fabulous with the hair down and natural. This will really accent those female curves don't you think?!
